Annual Symposium of LIABG
Co-sponsored by the OpenText.org project at www.opentext.org
The Linguistics Institute of Ancient and Biblical Greek (LIABG) offers an intense three-day workshop on issues surrounding the study of ancient and biblical Greek. Days are filled with seminars and presentations on the latest developments in ancient Greek study. These topics might include discussion of the following issues:
  • issues and problems in discourse analysis of ancient Greek
  • lexicography in the light of semantic domain theory
  • various theories of syntax
  • levels of linguistic analysis including word group, clause component, clause structure, clause complex, and paragraph
  • the challenges of corpus linguistics related to the study of ancient Greek
  • the problems of the case and voice systems
  • textual encoding and analysis
Attention will be paid to research publication, and pedagogical and exegetical implications of the discussion topics. Participants engage in facilitated discussion of topics of interest, including disseminating their own research.
The Symposium is not designed as an elementary course in Greek language, but provides an intensive hands-on seminar to encourage mutual interaction around major issues in recent linguistic study of ancient Greek, especially that of the New Testament and Hellenistic world. Participants in the workshop are required to come prepared to offer seminar presentations on issues of concern for them, under the guidance of the seminar directors. Those without substantial modern linguistic background will be encouraged to develop methods suitable for the study of ancient Greek, while those with more advanced understanding will be expected to help facilitate discussion. College, University and Seminary professors, and advanced students of Greek (graduate level), will all find this Institute to provide a useful engagement with current research and others engaged in such study. The Seminar Directors are Stanley E. Porter, Matthew Brook O'Donnell and Cynthia Westfall.
Attendees are required to bring topics and materials from their own research projects for discussion and further work. Those interested in the OpenText.org project and related ventures will be given opportunities for participation. Opportunities to publish the results of Institute research will be provided, such as in the Journal of the Linguistics Institute of Ancient and Biblical Greek (JLIABG).
