Symposium participant and LIABG member, Sean Adams, kindly produced the following summary of the event.
  • Day 1: Thursday, August 24, 2006
    • This day opened with an introduction to LIABG and a discussion of its goals and the general format that the conference will take. Each session began with a brief introduction and discussion of a linguistic issue. This day’s topics were morphology, semantics and syntax. The afternoon session continued with a paper by Cindy Westfall discussing an issue of lexis receptus and one by Andrew Pitts on case grammar. The evening provided some time to discuss the status of the OpenText.org project and some of its future developments.
  • Day 2: Friday, August 25, 2006
    • This day’s linguistic issues were pragmatics, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. These introductions were followed by papers from Randall Tan and Sean Adams. Papers in the afternoon were presented by Jim Dvorak, Catherine Smith, Jae Hyun Lee, Stanley Porter and Matthew Brook O’Donnell. Of particular note was the heated discussion following Adams’ paper of paragraphs and the paper given by Porter and O’Donnell on conjunctions, which is a good indication of the camaraderie that developed over this brief time.
    • For the evening, the discussion migrated to the house of Stan and Wendy Porter, where Wendy made an epic feast. This change of venue provided a more casual atmosphere for the participants to continue some of the conversations initiated earlier. Overall, this meal was the social highlight of LIABG and was a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level.
  • Day 3: Saturday, August 26, 2006
    • The final day of the conference began with a discussion of computational and corpus linguistics led by Matthew Brook O’Donnell, and continued with papers by Matt, Catherine Smith and Philip Burggraff.
    • The conference concluded with Porter and O’Donnell leading a session that discussed the nature of the conference and its format for following meetings. It was resolved that the overall structure of the conference would remain and that another meeting will be scheduled for the summer of 2007.
Thanks are also due to Cathy Fraser who helped make many of the practical arrangements, greet participants and provide refreshments. She also took the following pictures of the sessions in action.
